The Conversation Is the Spine
One-to-one chats and groups are the same object with a flag, so delivery, permissions, moderation and retention all work identically for both. Nothing has to be built twice, and nothing behaves differently in a group by accident.
Your Actions Never Change Mine
Starring, pinning, archiving, clearing and delete-for-me are stored against you, not against the message. That is why you can clear a conversation without erasing it for the person you were talking to.
Presence Lives in the Database
Live connections and typing state are recorded in the database rather than held in one server's memory. That is the groundwork that lets the real-time layer grow onto several servers when the user base needs it.
Media Paths Stay Relative

The topology is intentionally ordinary: a Node.js application behind a web server, MySQL as the system of record, file storage for media, and a scheduled job for the recurring cleanup. Nothing here needs a specialist to operate, and nothing exotic has to be running before you can take your first thousand users.
Messages and Media Outgrow Everything Else
On a messaging platform the fastest-growing thing is not the user table, it is the message table and the media folder beside it. Every conversation writes rows continuously, and every photo, video and voice note lands on disk. The two levers that matter are indexes on the columns that messages are actually fetched by, and a plan for moving media onto object storage before the disk becomes the constraint. Both are ordinary operations work, and both are far cheaper to do early than to retrofit.
Real-time connections are the second consideration. A single server handles a great many concurrent sockets comfortably, and because connection state is written to the database rather than held in memory, growing onto several servers is an adapter and a load balancer rather than a redesign.
The database is the natural scale boundary, as it is for any application of this shape. Connection pooling is in place, and the usual practices apply as volume grows: secondary indexes on the columns used for lookups, read replicas for the heavier dashboard queries, and a retention policy for media you no longer need to keep.
Calling deliberately does not scale with your bill. Because voice and video connect directly between devices, call volume consumes almost no server bandwidth. The relay server only carries the minority of calls where a restrictive network blocks the direct route.

Persistent sockets rather than polling, with connection state written to the database so several application servers can share the load behind a balancer when the time comes.
Message Table Growth
The tables that grow fastest are the conversation tables. Secondary indexes on the columns messages are fetched by are the single highest-value tuning step, and they are cheap when done early.
Media on Object Storage
Media is stored as relative paths, so moving the upload root onto S3-compatible storage is a configuration change rather than a migration that rewrites every existing row.
Calls Off the Critical Path
Voice and video traffic flows between devices instead of through your servers, so a busy calling day costs you bandwidth you never paid for in the first place.
Scheduled Cleanup
Story and pin expiry run hourly on a schedule. On a multi-server deployment the job is pinned to one instance so the same cleanup never runs twice.
Process Management
The application runs under PM2 for automatic restarts, clustering across CPU cores and log handling, which is the baseline reliability story before any additional infrastructure.

Authentication
Sign-in is by one-time code to a phone or email, so there is no user password database to steal in the first place. Operator passwords are hashed with bcrypt, and sessions are signed tokens that cannot be edited without breaking the signature.
Who Can Do What
The API is split into three tiers - public, signed-in user, and operator - with separate credentials for operators. Who you are is taken from your session token, never from a field in the request, which is what stops one account acting as another.
Conversation Access
You can only read a conversation you are a member of, and group admin rights are held on the membership record rather than on the conversation. Blocking is enforced on messages and calls from the moment it is set.
Database Safety
All database access goes through an ORM that parameterizes queries, which structurally removes SQL injection rather than relying on each developer remembering to escape input. Message content sits in that database as ciphertext, so a database compromise does not hand an attacker readable conversations.
Upload Handling
Files are routed to a folder by type and their filenames sanitized on the way in, so an upload cannot escape into a path it should not reach. Replacing a profile photo deletes the old file rather than leaving it behind.
Secrets Stay Server-Side
Your SMS, push, maps and email credentials live in server configuration and are shown masked in the console, so an operator can manage integrations without ever being able to read the key.
